It is officially spring. That means there is only one season between now and the 2023 Youth Camp season. As the staff wraps up our annual convention, it is crunch time for camp staff hiring and camp facility preparation, which will carry us through April and May. There is much to do before we welcome our campers.

At the beginning of April, we will have our first facility committee meeting. This is where MUCC staff meets with facility committee Chairman Robert Borchak, and other facility committee members to discuss maintenance updates and capital improvements that will be completed before June arrives. Maintenance plans for this year include getting some new mattresses for our cabins, finishing the improvements to the Director’s cabin, expanding the beachfront, removing invasive species and clearing large trees and debris around the property.

The end of April brings us to our camp opener, and the beginning of May is our annual spring clean-up at Cedar Lake Outdoor Center. With the help of MUCC staff, the facilities committee and other volunteers, our maintenance updates can be completed. We appreciate all who take part in getting camp ready for our youth.

If you want to be a part of the history of the Michigan Out-of-Doors Youth Camp, we are still looking for Conservation Educators to join us for work this summer. These are paid positions. We provide all staff with housing on the property, as well as provide meals during our two weeks of residential camp. The pay is $640 per week and includes signing and completion bonuses. Employment is for nine consecutive weeks, June through August. If you like to work with kids and enjoy the outdoors, apply today. Email your resume to the camp director at [email protected].

Since we have primarily day camp programming this summer, staff will get their nights off and most weekends. Staff may also stay in staff cabins when day camp is in session and have access to the kitchen and other recreational equipment on site. It is a high-paced but fun and rewarding summer job.

The support for camp we have received throughout convention weekend and the past few weeks has been inspiring. There is no shortage of passion from MUCC members, volunteers and staff to get camp in the best possible condition. The countdown to the first day of camp begins, 83 days!
