There is no lack of outdoor recreation or summer camps in Michigan. With such an environmentally diverse state, it is no wonder so many organizations are teaching Michigan youth to enjoy its wonders. The Michigan Out-of-Doors (MOOD) Youth Camp has been operating since 1946. As of 2022, we have educated more than 58,000 kids on conservation and outdoor skills. Each year, new ideas are implemented to improve the quality of camp and the comfort and safety of our campers. These ideas, our history and our desire to engage kids with the environment not only sets us apart in quality, but this list highlights the reasons MOOD Youth Camp is the best choice for Michigan youth.

  1.       You can feel the history

The Cedar Lake Outdoor Center was completed in the year 1940 by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The buildings and landscape are both historical and functional history. There are several original structures still on site. We take pride in our true ‘camp’ feel. The DNR and MUCC have maintained the property and make updates each year while keeping the facility’s authenticity.

2.       Hunter’s Safety

Along with the fun activities, songs and campfires, MOOD Youth Camp offers campers the chance to complete their hunter’s education course and receive their certificate. The final full day of overnight camps involve a field day for those completing the course. Those attending day camps can still take their course online and join us for a field day at the end of the summer.

       3.         A Welcoming Place

No matter who you are or where you live, your child has the chance to come to MOOD camp. You do not have to be a part of one of our affiliated clubs, or a member of Michigan United Conservation Clubs. Although a majority of our campers tend to come from clubs, we continuously try to reach as many kids as possible from all over the state. Registration for everyone opens on March 1st, and runs on a first come, first serve basis. With over 300 spots available each summer, we look forward to your camper joining us.

  1.       Hunting, Fishing and Trapping

MOOD Camp focuses on curriculum based around the outdoors and conservation. This allows each camper the chance to do activities they might otherwise never do. Activities include learning how to fish and about different fish species, learning the mechanics of a .22 rifle and testing their shot on the shooting range and participating in archery. Each summer, volunteers join us and demonstrate even more skills like trapping and the variety of Michigan birds. There is no lack of learning at our camp and often children get to experience their first time shooting a gun or fishing!

  1.       Our staff is highly qualified and dedicated

Starting as early as January each year, the camp director sorts through qualified candidates for open positions at camp. Multiple people are interviewed for each position in order to make sure we find the best fitting employees for the summer. Before each camp season, our staff goes through a week of training. They live on site during training, as well as throughout the 8 weeks of camp. All staff is also first aid and CPR certified. Campers are led by the best of outdoor enthusiasts.

Whether your child has been exposed to the outdoors and conservation or has no experience at all, our camp allows them to learn and explore with peers all while having fun. If you are looking to bring your child to a summer camp, check us out at www.mucccamp.org and registration opens March 1st, 2023.
